Behind The Scenes: How Our Sheep Throws Are Made

Have you ever wondered where your home furnishings come from?

Come behind the scenes of our small business and discover how our bestselling Sheep Throws are made. Crafted in small batches and designed to last, every wool throw is made with great care.

Inspiration and design

All our blankets start out with inspiration, I spend as much time in nature as possible because it’s where I get my best ideas. I always carry a little sketchbook with me. So I can capture ideas whenever they appear – most happen when you least expect them!

First, I sketch the idea by hand. Next, I recreate it on my ipad. This stage usually takes the longest. I tweak the details and refine the design until its just right. Some designs stay at this stage for years before I am happy with them.

Finally, I convert the finished artwork into a technical file. The production looms can then read the design and bring it to life.

raw materials and creating yarn

Many of our pieces, including our Sheep Throws, are made from pure wool.

The journey of a throw begins long before the weaving starts. First, sheep are shorn and the raw wool is carefully sorted and cleaned. Next, the fibres are carded. This process brushes and aligns the wool fibres into soft strands.

The wool is then spun into yarn. This transforms the loose fibres into strong, durable threads that can be woven into blankets and throws.

Although this stage often happens behind the scenes, it is an important part of the process. The quality of yarn helps determine the softness, strength and durability of the finished throw.

Bringing the design to life

After the wool is spun into yarn, it is dyed if needed. Then weaving begins.

This is such a lovely stage of the process. Seeing a design come to life in the looms is always so exciting.

Next, the woven fabric is washed, dried and brushed to create its soft finish. Afterwards, it moves on to the finishing department.

At this stage, labels are added and each throw is carefully folded and packed by hand.

Finally, the finished throws are shipped to us. We carefully store them until they are ready for their new homes.
