Behind the Scenes: The Process of Creating Our Textiles

I’m Jurate, the designer behind J.J. Textile. Every design begins with a moment of inspiration—often from nature, a walk in the countryside or something i’ve sketched in my notebook.

Here’s a look at how that idea becomes a finished product.

1) Where Ideas Begin

As i’m sure is clearly evident, most of my ideas are shaped by the countryside where I live. I’m drawn to the comfort and familiarity of everyday rural life and I love blending that with contemporary interior trends to give our collection a modern twist. Some designs start as a quick sketch I do on the go; others stay in my head until I know how to develop them.

2) Drawing with a purpose

Once i’ve got a rough idea, I sketch it out. Sketching helps me to figure our the shapes and mood of a design. When i’ve got something i’m happy with, I work on turning it into a repeat pattern that will work on a woven fabric—not always as simple as it sounds. Some ideas fall apart at this stage. They might look fine in a  sketch but just don’t translate well into weave. It’s all part of the process: trial, error and adjusting until it fits.

3) Not just any fabric will do

I work with natural fibres wherever I can—mainly wool and cotton. They’re soft, durable and renewable, which makes them a good fit both practically and ethically. When it comes to colour, I let the design guide the palette. For example, the Puffin Blanket has a bright edging as a nod to the colour on the bird’s beak. The result is a collection of pieces that feel cosy, natural and easy to live with.

4) Working with our mills

Once I am happy with the design, it gets sent to one of our mills. I work closely with them on everything—sample weaving, adjusting colours if needed and finalising the finish. We’ve built a strong relationship over the years which helps keep quality consistent.

5) One final check (or three!)

Each piece is carefully checked before it leaves us. Texture, weight, stitching—it all has to meet my high-standards. I want every blanket or cushion to last for years, whether it’s going into someone’s living room or being given as a gift. If something feels even slightly off, it doesn’t go out.

But for the first time ever, we’re offering a small number of these “not-so-perfect” pieces at a discount. These have only minor flaws—nothing that affects their function or softness, just the sort of detail i’d spot and hold back. If you don’t mind a tiny imperfection, it’s a chance to grab a bargain. 6) Made for real life

Our blankets and cushions are made to for the wear-and-tear of normal use. All are fully reversible too, making them practical and versatile to use day after day.

A Final Word

As a small, independent studio, every step of the process is hands-on. I sketch each design, choose the colours, oversee production and check the final piece. Each blanket or cushion is more than just a product, it’s a part of me—something i’ve put real time and care into. My wish is that it becomes something you use and enjoy, season after season.
